Tackling challenge in Nogata City, Fukuoka!

Registration is open for the co-creation workshop. The theme is “Improving Medication Adherence”

i2.JP has annually hosted large-scale business matching events centered around reverse pitches from municipalities and companies. During these events, we received numerous requests from participants wanting to spend more time taking a deep dive into their ideas. This year, we are holding a "deep-dive" workshop as a spin-off that allows for more time for ideation.

In this workshop, our partner companies ASTEM, Inc., Bridge Co., Ltd., and AstraZeneca K.K. (i2.JP) will focus on the challenge faced by Nogata City, Fukuoka Prefecture: “Improving Medication Adherence*.”
Please join us on Thursday, February 26, for the co-creation of a regional model for solving health issues in Nogata City!

*Medication Adherence:
Patients understand their illness and treatment, accept it, and proactively continue to adhere to their medication regimen.

Workshop Overview

Overview of Nogata City’s Challenges

In Nogata City, residents aged 65 and older account for 34% of the population, which is higher than the national average. Over the next 20 years, the city expects a population decline of about 10,000 people, as well as a sharp increase in residents aged 75 and older. Consequently, the demand for medical and nursing care will likely increase. In fact, medical expenses have risen from 340,000 yen to 380,000 yen over the past decade, highlighting challenges regarding the sustainability of community healthcare.

To address these challenges, Nogata City collaborated with Kyushu University to conduct the LIFE Study®. Using claims data from 2019 to 2023, they analyzed residents' medication adherence. The results revealed significant individual variation in adherence. Discontinuation of medication was associated with increased disease incidence and mortality rates. The impact of non-adherence was shown to grow over time, ultimately contributing to higher medical costs.

This leads us to believe that it is necessary to design and implement community-based medication adherence support tailored to different generations and living conditions, based on the data. Specifically, we must establish mechanisms to prevent missed doses among the elderly, enhance convenience for working-age individuals, build collaborative models with medical institutions and community organizations, and continuously run a cycle of effectiveness measurement and improvement.

In this workshop, we will share the current situation in Nogata City and, based on insights from the LIFE Study®, explore a community-based model best suited for Nogata City, which aims to simultaneously improve residents' quality of life (QOL) and ensure the soundness of local finances. We hope you will join us for the discussion.
